Crowhollow

Crowhollow is an independent campaign setting for use with Shadowdark RPG — powered by the Dragon Gate Engine. The sun has not touched these lands in an age. A rotting province trapped in eternal twilight, its ruined capital, Eboncrest, clings to the edge of the Morterrus Trench.

Caught in a hidden war between heaven and hell, you must navigate a world where reality is thin and the shadows have teeth.

You are not a hero; you are a survivor on the edge of the void. The gold is real, but so is the dark. Keep your torch lit.

An old woman kneels near the stairwell entrance, arranging wildflowers on a flat stone. She wears a patched wool coat too heavy for the season. Her hands are steady as she presses each stem into place. A clay jug of water sits beside her. She doesn't look up at your approach, but her shoulders tighten — she knows you're there.

You rest one hand on your sword's pommel. The church ruins stretch wide around you, broken walls and shattered tile. The cleared path leads down. The darkness waits.

Light a torch

You strike flint against steel. The spark catches the torch's tinder — a small orange bloom that spreads along the wrapped fibers. The flame steadies, guttering once before settling into a steady burn. Warm light spills across the rubble, pushing back the grey afternoon gloom.

'You're going down,' she says. Not a question.

Talk to the figure

You step closer, torch held steady. The old woman's hand remains pressed against the stone, but her eyes shift to meet yours. When she speaks, her voice is careful — each word placed like a stone into still water.

'You're not from the village.' Not a question. 'The path here is fresh, but you didn't make it.' She pauses, studying the torchlight on your face. 'I came to bring water and flowers. For the dead.'

What is Dragon Gate?

Dragon Gate is a platform for immersive adventures in living worlds. You speak or type what you do, and the world responds — then remembers. Play solo when you want something close and personal, or bring a group when you want noise and momentum. You can keep it to friends or meet new people in the Dragon Gate Hub and step in together.

We’re an independent studio focused on a hand-picked library of worlds — fewer worlds, deeper worlds, supported for the long haul. We craft each world’s setting, cast, and core story material, and we design the rules of that world too — what danger feels like, what choices cost, how characters grow. Then the Engine uses that foundation to respond in real time.

Dragon Gate Studio builds a small library of worlds — fewer worlds, deeper support.

We do the work by hand: maps, factions, histories, characters, and the rules that make each world a game.

AI isn’t the world. It’s the interface that lets you step inside it.

The Engine

The Engine is what makes “living world” mean something: memory, continuity, and fair resolution. It combines our AI stack with the specific rules that define how each world behaves. Crowhollow lives and dies by torchlight; Kunlun will live and die by cultivation, discipline, and fate. The Engine is what keeps those laws and that memory intact while you play.

The Engine keeps a living world coherent: memory, continuity, and fair outcomes.

It applies the world’s rules and state first, then uses AI to describe what happens — not to override the rules.

A note from the founders

Dragon Gate Studio is an independent band of creatives, dreamers, and engineers who believe in living worlds.

We started this project because we’ve all had that one session where the table goes quiet, everyone leans in, and the world on the map suddenly feels real. We wanted to build a place where that feeling can happen more often — and where it doesn’t vanish when the night is over.

We still do the work by hand: drawing maps, shaping histories, writing characters and factions, and designing the laws that make each world a game as well as a story. Under it all is the quiet architecture of code, tended by our resident level-20 tech wizard — whose team turns imagination into something you can actually step inside.

Our AI Game Master isn’t here to replace your table. It’s here to keep the story going — to listen, react, and remember when life makes it hard to get everyone in the same room. The places you visit remember you. The people you meet carry what you’ve done.

We still love dice and candlelight. That’s why our signature worlds will also appear as pen-and-paper rulebooks for those who want the full tabletop experience. We’re still early, but the worlds are already forming. If you’ve ever wanted to step into another world we’d be glad to have you with us.
